His first book, Once the Shore, won the Asian American Literary Award for Fiction[1] and was selected as a New York Times Notable Book[2], a Los Angeles Times[3], San Francisco Chronicle[4], Publishers Weekly[5], Minneapolis Star Tribune[6] Best Book of the Year, and a National Public Radio Best Debut of the Year[7]. His work has appeared in the PEN/O. Henry Prize Stories[8], The Best American Short Stories, and he is the recipient of a 5 under 35 Award from the National Book Foundation[9]. He is currently on the faculty of the Bennington Writing Seminars[10] and lives in Baltimore with the author Laura van den Berg[11].
