The general attractiveness of a man or woman in a given place or set of circumstances (marketplace). This usage is common throughout the collection of hundreds of websites, blogs and forums in the English speaking Western world known as the Manosphere<ref>T. P. Sexual market value is a key concept in the Game/Seduction community of the Manosphere. Because women's SMV is said to be based more on fertility and youthful attractiveness, whereas men's SMV is based more on status, women are said to reach their peak SMV at around age 23, whereas men reach their peak SMV at around age 36. These differing trajectories in SMV are said to in part define effective mating strategies for men and women. In particular, in times past older generations were said to steer young women into marriage to a man with potential. Though in the young woman’s eyes it might have looked like she was settling for less than the ideal, the older generations were said to have been mindful that a woman’s market value was fleeting while a man’s market value would continue growing for years to come.

<blockquote>''The time for a woman to land one of these up-and-comers was while her value was high and his was comparatively low. The man benefited early on by having a beautiful, fertile bride and she benefited later by having a man who was working steadily to provide a comfortable life for herself and their children.''<ref name="elephantsandtrees.wordpress">White Raven, [http://elephantsandtrees.wordpress.com/2012/06/06/male-shaming-and-sexual-market-value/ "Male Shaming and Sexual Market Value"],"Elephants & Trees" 2012-06-06</ref></blockquote>

''Game'' theory encourages men to be aware of their increasing SMV in comparison to women's decreasing SMV after women's early peak, and to be aware of women's rapidly declining SMV afterwards so as to best leverage their position in the sexual market place. Game theorists criticize what they say are deeply misleading accounts in the mainstream media that effectively tell women that they are entitled to spend their years of high market value giving away sex promiscuously in attempts to land an elusive alpha male, and then turning around and telling men that they should be sacrificing their high market value years to create a soft landing for these women who facing a declining SMV decide "to step off of the carousal and into the open arms of a waiting beta provider".<ref name="elephantsandtrees.wordpress" />

Others in the Game community have commented some inherent flaws in using the sexual market theory to evaluate dating options. And that therefore women's lowering SMV was not necessarily a predictor of relationship stability (i.e., the more options you have, the less likely you are to be monogamously faithful).<ref name="heartiste.wordpress">Heartiste, [http://heartiste.wordpress.com/2011/06/16/is-the-sexual-market-efficient/ "Is The Sexual Market Efficient?"],"Chateau Heartiste" 2011-06-16</ref>

The reasoning was that because men more often initiate interactions, women get much more feedback in the sexual marketplace than men. But because this feedback is only a gauge of immediate sexual interest, rather than long term sexual relationship interest, it provokes women to err in assessing their market value should they divorce. The short term sexual interest skews their perception, leading to divorce based on artificially inflated sexual market value. ''"Once single, and after a few pump and dumps, their true sexual market value is revealed, and they have to settle for something within their shrinking relationship options."''<ref name="heartiste.wordpress" />

The issue these Game theorists noted, is that the sexual market is efficient at offering immediate feedback on the kind of sexual interest that a woman can command, but not so efficient at offering feedback on her value as a long term relationship partner, since a woman can walk down the street and know instantly by the number of men’s eyes which glance her way, how easy it will be for her to arouse a man to want to sleep with her. But she can't know how many of those men are also willing to invest in her and nurture a loving relationship with her until she has herself invested time in them, since most men are reluctant to tell a marginal fling he has no intention for her to become his long term girlfriend or wife.

One Game theorist going by the pseudonym ''Dalrock'' contends that until a woman is in her late twenties, women have the greater SMV and therefore greater power in the sexual market. However with the recent pattern that women are delaying marriage past their most marriageable years, these theorist postulate that the marriage market power could shift from women to men.<ref name="dalrock.wordpress">Dalrock, [http://dalrock.wordpress.com/2011/06/15/economics-of-sex/ "Economics of sex"],"Dalrock" 2011-06-15</ref>

Although plenty of women dabble in sexual-market relationships and then settle down successfully with life partners, he said, many women are “not witnessing marriage happening on the timetables they prefer and expected.”

The concept of value in the "sexual market" has also appeared in the popular media.<ref>Cheryl Wetzstein, [http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/jun/14/economy-of-sex-its-cheap-these-days/?page=all "Economics of sex"],"The Washington Times" 2011-06-14</ref>
