Planaltina de Goiás is a city located in the center of the state of Goiás, Brazil. The estimated population in 2005 was 91,900 making it the tenth largest city in the state.

Planaltina is part of micro-region 12 of the state, the so-called Região do Entorno de Brasília. It borders Água Fria de Goiás, Formosa, Mimoso de Goiás, Padre Bernardo and, of course, the Distrito Federal.

It is located on the northeastern boundary of the Federal District north of the satellite city of Planaltina. It is 273 kilometers from the state capital Goiânia and 55 km. from Brasília.

Planaltina de Goiás is the gateway to an enormous area of ecological preservation, in which can be found the important Chapada dos Veadeiros national park. Nearby is Lagoa Formosa, which, with its 17 square kilometers of surface area, is the largest natural lake in the state of Goiás.

The município is an exception, since, although it is more than 100 years old, the municipal seat is only 40 years old. This is because the town moved when Brasília was built.

Nearby is the source of the Maranhão River, which flows north into the Tocantins

The population is very poor and there is a serious deficit in infrastructure with no hospitals and poor commercial facilities. Most of the inhabitants work in Brasilia and spend hours on buses to get to their work. According to studies, at least one member of each family works in Brasília. The per capita income is from one to two minimum salaries.

The economy is based on services, jobs generated by the government, and some agriculture, especially citrus fruits, corn and soybeans. The Gross Domestic Product was 159.4 million Reais (80 million dollares) in 2002. [1]

The main agricultural products are:

  • cattle: 44,560 head (5,800 milking cows)
  • bananas: 70 hectares / 560 tons
  • coffee: 70 hectares / 35 tons
  • citrus fruits: 107 hectares / 750 tons
  • pineapple: 10 hectares / 150 thousand fruits
  • rice: 230 hectares / 276 tons
  • sugarcane: 30 hectares / 900 tons
  • beans: 500 hectares / 750 tons
  • manioc: 150 hectares / 1,500 tons
  • corn: 2,800 hectares / 14,010 tons
  • soybeans: 6,600 hectares / 18,489 tons
  • sorghum: 500 hectares / 1,800 tons
  • tomatoes: 8 hectares / 400 tons
