Flat3 is a New Zealand comedy web series written and directed by Roseanne Liang.[1] It stars co-creators JJ Fong as Jessica, Perlina Lau as Perlina, and Ally Xue as Lee.[2]

Flat3 premiered on YouTube and Vimeo on February 22nd, 2013.[3] Season one features six episodes, each lasting less than 10 minutes duration.[4] Based around three Kiwi-Asian girls living together in Auckland, the show follows Lee, Jessica, and Perlina as they try to “figure out who they are, what they’re doing in this life, and whose turn it is to buy toilet paper”.[5] The creators describe the show’s comedic style as ‘sometimes smart, often silly, a little rude and a lot awkward’.[6]

History
JJ Fong, Perlina Lau and Ally Xue were inspired to create a comedy web series after experiencing a lack of roles as Asian actresses working in the New Zealand screen industry.[7] Flat3 formed when Roseanne Liang joined the team as writer and director. After missing out on funding from New Zealand On Air, the creators called upon friends to help shoot the first season.[8] The show has found online success both locally and internationally,[9] it screened at the Friars Comedy Club Festival 2013 in New York.[10]

Season 2 of Flat3 is currently on hold as the creators apply for funding.[11]

Characters and Cast

Lee is quiet and reserved. She is always going along with other people’s plans because she is too afraid to speak up. Lee struggles to find employment as an Art History major. Her dream is to be an artist. Lee is portrayed by actress Ally Xue.[12]

Jessica is the dramatic one. After graduating Performing Arts school, she wants to be taken as a serious actress. Jessica adopts Lee as a personal project, to find her a boyfriend. Jessica is portrayed by actress JJ Fong.[13]

Perlina is blunt with honesty. She says what she thinks without any thought of the consequences or social etiquette. As a result, she has fewer friends than she would like. Perlina is portrayed by actress Perlina Lau.[14]

Simon is an accountant who is outwardly off-beat and creepy. He first appears in the series as a potential flatmate during flat interviews. Simon is portrayed by actor Simon Ward.[15]

Jackie Chan is a waiter and a love interest of Jessica. The self-described ‘walking cliché’ rescues her from an embarrassing situation. Jackie is portrayed by Mike Ginn.[16]

Katrina is Perlina’s co-worker. They perform together as a quirky musical duo known as ‘Super Sisters in the Super City’. Katrina is portrayed by actress Katrina Wesseling.[17]

Hweiling is an actress and Jessica’s competition. Hweiling likes to party despite being the mother of a toddler. Hweiling is portrayed by actress Hweiling Ow.[18]

Aidan is a love interest of Jessica. He is good looking, charming, and also works as an actor. Aidan is portrayed by actor Matariki Whatarau.[19]

Nick is Perlina’s ex-boyfriend. He meets Perlina for a debrief meeting after their break-up. Nick is portrayed by actor Nick Sampson.[20]

AJ/‘Andrew Garfield’ is a pizza delivery boy and Lee’s crush. AJ is portrayed by AJ Driver.[21]

Dan is Lee’s incompetent career consultant. Dan is portrayed by actor Dan Cowley.[22]

Raj is Perlina’s new co-worker. Raj is portrayed by Raj Maiti.[23]
