Personal Life and Education

Ivan D’Souza is an Indian Politician. He was born on 10th August 1965 at Mudarangady, in Udupi District. Ivan did his primary education in St. Francis Xavier Higher Primary School in Mudarangady and high school education at St. Mary’s High School, Shirva. He then completed his PUC and graduation from St. Aloysius College Mangalore. He obtained his LLB graduate degree from SDM Law College in Mangalore to in 1989. He began his leadership through Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) organization from Mudarangady parish. [1] [2] [3]

Political Career

Ivan D'Souza is currently a member of Indian National Congress and a popular catholic leader. In 2008, Ivan D'Souza was named as the candidate of Indian National Congress for Mangalore South constituency. He was defeated by BJP candidate N. Yogish Bhat. Ivan D'Souza was a front runner to contest again from Mangalore South constituency in 2013 Karnataka State Elections. He is currently the KPCC Member and Convener of Election Committee for the Indian National Congress in Dakshina Kannada[4] [5]

He began his political career in 1992, when he contested for Village Panchayath elections of Mudarangady, got elected and served for seven years as a member of the same. [6]

In 1990 he became the District President of Yuva Janatha Dal of Undivided Dakshina Kannada District. In 1994, Ivan contested the Karnataka state elections from the Kaup constituency as a candidate from Janatha Party. He lost it with a small margin of 4712 votes against Mr. Vasanth Salian, a Minister from Congress Party. [7] In 1999, When Janata Dal party got divided as JD-U (Janata Dal - United) and JD-S (Janata Dal - Secular). He remained in JDS and contested for the state legislative assembly from Kaup Constituency again. [8]. In 2004, he joined Congress in the presence of CM, Mr. S. M. Krishna in Bangalore and was appointed as the District Vice President of Congress Party. [9]

Voice against Social Injustice

On September 14, 2008, Catholic and Christian churches and prayer houses were attacked in an organized manner by miscreants [10], Ivan D'Souza led the protests against the injustice and subsequent inaction by the state government.[11] [12]

Karnataka State Election 2013

Ivan D'Souza was popular leader and was favorite to become the official candidate of Indian National Congress in 2013 from Mangalore South constituency. However John Richard Lobo was selected as the official candidate of Indian National Congress from Mangalore South constituency. Ivan D'Souza's supporters openly protested against the decision for not giving Ivan D'Souza a chance to contest. [15] [16] [17]

Considering his popularity, KPCC president Dr. Parameshwar appointed Ivan D'Souza as the convener of the election committee for the eight assembly constituencies in Mangalore (Dakshina Kannada) district. [18] [19]
