Troy and Abed in the Morning refers to a recurring bit on the American television show Community. It is the morning show that Troy Barnes (Donald Glover) and Abed Nadir (Danny Pudi) pretend to host. It should be noted that the morning show is entirely made up by the characters, unlike Inspector Spacetime, which is a show existing in the Community universe which Troy and Abed often role play. After the airing of community's fourth season was delayed by NBC, a segment of Troy and Abed in the Morning was produced to acknowledge the delay.

Occurrences

  • Season 1, Episode 20 "The Science of Illusion" with Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) as a surprised guest.
The first appearance of the show within a show was in the 20th episode of the first season. There was no introduction or explanation of the fake talk show's purpose. The talk show was also unrelated to the theme or events of the episode it followed. It began displaying a format of many daily talk shows, with the hosts, Troy and Abed, holding coffee cups and smiling, with fans holding signs outside of the windows of the studio (or in this case the library) and a guest to their right. The guest of the show was Jeff Winger, who has no knowledge of why he is there or what to talk show really is. Within the first episode of the fake talk show, Troy and Abed recite their introduction song, "Troy and Abed in the moorrning!", and then begin to ask Jeff about how he stays fit. Jeff answers the question, the two hosts laugh then ask Jeff to set up a video clip that Jeff knows nothing about, nor does it actually exist. Despite being clearly annoyed, Jeff attempts to play along with the fake talk show until he eventually walks out in a huff.
The second appearance of the show is laid out similar to that of this first; however this time Troy and Abed are joined by Alex Osbourne who is commonly known on the show as 'Starburns' because he has sideburns that are shaved in the shape of stars. Starburns is holding a turtle and after Troy and Abed ask him a number of questions about the turtle's diet, it is revealed that Starburns does not actually own the turtle and that Troy and Abed provided him with it upon asking him to smile for the folks at home. Troy and Abed are also joined by Garrett, another character in the show, who plays their weatherman on the fake talk show for one appearance. Garrett proclaims that, "It is still sunny!, while standing in front of a chalkboard with a sun drawn on it.
The third appearance of the fake show has some correlation with the episode that it precedes. A new character, Dr. Rich, is introduced and one of the regular cast members, Annie Edison, develops a crush on him. This makes Jeff Winger, who has a semi-romantic relationship with Annie, jealous. On the Troy and Abed in the Morning Show, Dr. Rich is the guest, on the show to discuss his famous kettle corn. Troy and Abed, holding their customary coffee mugs, are wearing aprons and standing behind a tray and bags of kettle corn along with ingredients used to make the snack. When asked what sets his kettle corn a part, Rich replies that it is made with a couple extra pinches of love. Jeff then pops in, annoyed, and reiterates to Rich that the show is fake and possesses no cameras. Rich claims that he is aware and feels that the fake show is a fun way to start his day. Once Jeff storms off, Rich chimes in with Troy and Abed to sing their theme song.
  • Season 3, Episode 16 "Virtual Systems Analysis" with Annie Edison (Alison Brie)) giving interior design tips.
In the fourth appearance of the fake talk show, Troy and Abed are situated in their apartment and are joined by their roommate, Annie Edison, as their special guest. Annie is on the fake talk show to discuss how to spruce up one's apartment on a budget and to provide tips on entertaining. She first explains that she put a throw blanket on their couch to cover up the soda that Abed had spilled there and later informs the 'audience' that if they're expecting guests and don't have enough chairs, that they can use pillows on the floor and, "go for a Moroccan theme". She then discloses that she has made over Troy and Abed's room with blankets, pillows and by debunking their bunk beds. This news sends Abed into a breakdown and Troy is forced to hold up a 'Technical Difficulties' sign as Garrett, who is acting as the camera man, hums a song.
  • Season 3, Episode 19 "Curriculum Unavailable" a very special "...Nights" edition. This episode also has a clip of Troy and Abed walking in on Annie pretending to be a co-anchor on the fake show.
In the fifth appearance of the fake talk show, Troy and Abed are again situated in their apartment; however this episode takes place at night which prompts the two to add "niiggghtss" to then end of their theme song. The two hosts are seated, in pajamas and are drinking chocolate milk out of brandy glasses. Troy and Abed "take" a call from a viewer. In reality, it is Jeff who has been called by the two at 3 in the morning. He is obviously annoyed. The second call is from Annie Edison who proceeds to bang on the door and yell from her room that the two should go to bed. The two hosts sign off with their modified theme song.
  • Hiatus between season three and four.
In the sixth appearance of the fake talk show, Troy and Abed talk about their show's premiere date of october 19th. October 19th is referenced as a feeling rather than a specific time. This segment is a commentary about Community's season four premiere being delayed after a return date of October 19th had already been announced. [1]
