Kuwait Television is a Kuwaiti state-run television station, part of the Ministry of information. Kuwait began broadcasting its first state-run channel on November 5, 1961.[1] It initially broadcast in black and white for four hours a day.

Early broadcasters included Salem Al-Fahd And Reza Faili and Jassim Al-Shehab.

Kuwait Television has 4 channels and a satellite channel: KTV1, KTV2, KTV Sport, Al Araby Channel, and Ethra's Channel.

KTV1

KTV1 launched on April 7, 1992 with 24 hour broadcasting.[2] By 1997, the channel was viewable all the way to North America, broadcasting Kuwaiti-produced programming globally.[3] The channel's programming cycle changes every three months or so, and it has a special content for the month of Ramadan. Daily programs on the channel include Good Morning Kuwait, Baitak program, and Good Evening program. Also the broadcasts, included in, are a variety of cultural, religious, and state event programs.[4]

KTV2

KTV2 is the only English speaking channel in the state run channels. It includes English programs as well as Arabic programs translated into English. This channel's purpose and mission is aimed at promoting Kuwait's media policy abroad, show foreign viewers segments of the Kuwaiti culture and news, and to foster relationships between the State, the Kuwaiti public, and expatriates in Kuwait by showing local programming that is family -centered.[5]

KTV Sport

KTV Sport began broadcasting in 1994 and shows sports-related programming. Initially chaired by Mr. Mohammed Al Zamel, this channel was considered at the time as the leading sports channel in the Persian Gulf region.[6] It originally only showed broadcasts of local sports, but it has since opened up to include international sporting events, as well. To do so, the channel switched from ground transmission to satellite transmission in 2002.[7]

Al Araby Channel

This is a cultural channel, launched on February 25, 2009, under the direction of the former Minister of Information, HE Sheikh Sabah Al Khalid Al Sabah.[8] Programming includes literary, cultural, scientific, and artistic based shows, and it also covers cultural events such as the Quran Cultural Festival, Music Festival, Theater Festival, Book Fair, and Cultural Summer Festival. Al Araby channel coordinates with KTV1 when covering national events.

Ethra's Channel

Ethra's Channel shows religious programming that introduces Islam, supports Islamic values and principles, and relays Islam's spiritual value. It coordinates with Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, as well as with the Awqaf Public Foundation, to produce information that supports moderation of Islam, rather than the extremist or destructive ideologies that might be aired elsewhere.[9] The channel also covers religious events in Kuwait.
