Born in 1949 in Hassanabad, Srinagar in Kashmir he left home at young age to pursue studies at Aligarh University After studies he joined Sheikh Abdullah and pursued a fruitful career as a leader of the National Conference.

He was elected MLA of Zadibal from 1993-98 and MLC for several terms since 1977.
