Greeters are voluntary and non professional tour guides offering free walks in cities or regions. Encountering travelers and the individual presentation of the own city or region is crucial for the project. The umbrella association is the "Global Greeter Network".

History

The "Greeter" initiative was founded in 1992 by Lynn Brooks with the association "Big Apple Greeter" in New York City.[1] The voluntary and personal hosting of tourists should improve the bad image of the megacity. More "Greeter" projects followed in other US-American cities and worldwide. Today, more than 300 volunteers "greet" over 7000 visitors per year in New York City (as of 2010).[2] The "Berlin Greeter" started the first German "Greeter" initiative in December 2008.[3]

"Greeter" programs

Definition, organization and legal form of the individual "Greeter" programs vary. The projects are predominantly offered in metropolis and towns, partly also in greater regions (Rhein-Ahr, Kent, Pas de Calais) or even nationwide (Ivory Coast). While many "Greeter" programs are organised in independent associations, others are cooperating strongly with local tourist offices.

  • Visitors are welcomed without any kind of discrimination.
  • Greeter programs support sustainable tourism. Programs respects natural and man-made environments, it brings both cultural and economical enrichment to the local communities. Programs aim for a lasting positive image of each destination.
