SteamOS is a linux distribution for personal computers and gaming PC consoles envisioned by Valve. The main goal is to create a ubiquitous free open source gaming platform. In the future, this could be a universal solution for developers and users on the desktop.
Valve claims that SteamOS will always be free and will be free to download as well as the use of all interested parties and manufacturers. Thus, if a company want to offer SteamOS on your gaming console, you can do so without having to pay any fees to Valve.
