The Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra (DSSO) is an American orchestra based in Duluth, Minnesota. Since 1966, the DSSO has performed at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center (DECC) Auditorium. The orchestra's season run from September to May each year. [1]

History

Duluth, Minnesota has a rich history of professional orchestras reaching as far back as 1883. The beginnings of the Duluth Civic Orchestra occurred in 1931 at the house of Alphin Flaaten, a professional music teacher. The first concert was on May 2, 1932, under Walter Lange's baton. The organization met with overwhelming support and Paul Lemay, principal violist and assistant conductor of the Minneapolis Symphony, became the first full-time conductor.
The initial concerts took place at the Duluth Armory. In 1966, the orchestra moved to the DECC, seating over 2,200 and a waterfront location. In the 1974-75 season, the name of the orchestra was changed to Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra to reflect the close relationship between the Twin Ports, Duluth and Superior.
Since its inception in 1932, the DSSO has proven to be a leading cultural organization in the Northeastern Minnesota region. Now in its 81st season, the DSSO has consistently provided professional performances of symphonic sound, both traditional and new, to audiences of every age and background. [2]

Music Director

This season marks Dirk Meyer's first year as Music Director of the DSSO. Meyer conducted six concerts for the DSSO last season as Music Director Designate. His conducting has been described as "mesmerizing" and "out of this world."
During the past few years, Meyer held conducting positions with the Sarasota Orchestra in Florida, having just been named their Principal Guest Conductor. In 2012, Meyer was awarded first place of The American Prize in orchestral conducting. He has guest conducted many orchestras throughout the United States including the Springfield Symphony, Naples Philharmonic and The Florida Orchestra. In 2014, Meyer will be debuting with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in Canada.
Passionate about opera, Meyer has conducted several productions in the U.S. as well as the Czech Republic and Bulgaria. He has also worked as assistant conductor in several European houses. In 2013, he worked closely with the Lyric Opera of the North (LOON), and his involvement with this company will be continuing during the upcoming seasons. In addition to symphony and opera, he possesses a special interest in contemporary music.
Maestro Meyer is the author of "Chamber Orchestra and Ensemble Repertoire. A Catalog of Modern Music," published by Scarecrow Press (2011).
Meyer earned Doctoral and Master degrees in orchestral conducting from Michigan State University and Bachelor degrees from Folkwang Conservatory in Germany (Music) and the University Duisburg-Essen (Philosophy). [3]
