Alvaro Sobrinho is the founder and chairman of the bank Banco Espirito Santo Angola Sarl and chairman of Planet Earth Institution Ltd., an international nongovernmental organization with the mission of building scientific expertise in the Global South and focused on delivering scientific independence to African countries.[1]

Alvaro was born in Luanda, Angola in 1962. Alvaro completed his BA in Mathematics and MA in Analysis and Statistics in the Universidade Nova de Lisboa in Portugal and started his career at Banco Espirito Santo SA, a large Portugal-based financial group. BES is owned by the Luxembourg based Espirito Santo Financial Group SA (ESFG), which is listed on the NYSE, Euronext and London Stock Exchanges.

In 2000, at the age of 38, Alvaro Sobrinho became one of the directors of BES and was assigned to move back to Angola and set up a local branch. With 10 million dollars as initial funding, the bank (Banco Espirito Santo Angola Sarl), the Angolan subsidiary of BES, established by Mr. Sobrinho grew to become larger than its parent company in Portugal. The bank today is the largest and financially stable bank in Angola. BESA has received multiple awards, including the World Finance award as the Best Bank in Angola in 2009, and Global Finance Magazine’s award as the Best Bank in Angola in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.[2]

In parallel with BESA bank, Alvaro Sobrinho established several family businesses in Angola. The biggest source of growth was real estate that the family acquired prior to the end of the war.

Mr. Sobrinho is a sought after speaker in various conferences regarding Africa and recently spoke at Chatamhouse in London.[3]
