Hickory Grove Christian School (HGCS) is a private, Christian, college-preparatory school located in Charlotte, North Carolina and consists of an early education center, elementary school, middle school, and high school. Founded in 1995 by the leadership of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, the school exists "to know Christ and to make Him known through Christian education." The school's mission is "to equip students to serve God in the 21st century by providing an excellent academic program founded upon a biblical worldview."

History

In 1995, Hickory Grove Baptist Church started its school as a ministry to make Christ known in the community. The school was started as a K-2 school, and each year added a grade until 2004, when HGCS graduated its first class of seniors.

School facts

There are four school divisions: Early Education Center (birth-4 years old), Elementary School (TK-5), Middle School (6th-8th), and High School (9th-12th). The School incorporates athletics and fine arts into the academic schedule. At the beginning of the 2013-2014 year, the school enrolled 1,210 students (268 students in Early Education Center, 346 in Elementary School, 235 in Middle School, and 361 in High School).

Accreditation and Memberships

HGCS is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI).

Organization and Administration

The school, a non-profit organization, is composed of four educational divisions: Early Education Center, Elementary School, Middle School, and High School with individual principals.

Faculty

The Early Education Center has 26 full- and part-time teachers. The TK-12 school has 94 faculty and staff members, 79 of which are full- and part-time teachers. The average K-12 full-time faculty member has 14 years of classroom experience, with 22 percent having attained advanced degrees. The school staff also includes a full-time athletic director, admissions director, finance director, guidance counselor, and school nurse.

Academics

In 2013, 96 percent of HGCS graduates pursued their education beyond the secondary level, 3 percent joined the military, and 1 percent pursued missions. In 2013, 81 percent attended a 4-year college/ university and 19 percent attended a 2-year postsecondary institution. The High School offers 23 honors classes and 10 AP classes including AP Language, Literature, Biology, U.S. History, Calculus, Chemistry, Statistics, Government & Politics, Human Geography & Environment, and Computer Science. In May 2013, 61 students took 105 AP exams with over 77 percent scoring a “3” or better. The mean SAT scores for the Class of 2013 were: 543 (verbal/critical reading); 521 (math); and 527 (writing), for a total verbal + math average of 1064, and total composite score of 1591.

Athletics

HGCS' Athletic department offers 10 sports (boys and girls), and fields 27 teams in those sports at the Middle School, Junior Varsity, and Varsity Levels. More than 65 percent of HGCS students in grades 6-12 participate in School-sponsored athletics.

Director of Baseball Operations

On April 12, 2012, the school announced Grady Little, former Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox manager, as the new director of baseball operations and head varsity coach. Little had also managed various minor league teams for more than 15 years, including the Charlotte Orioles, Durham Bulls and Richmond Braves. Little was a 1968 Major League Baseball draft pick and played in the Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees organizations.[1] [2]

Athletic Director

On June 19, 2012, the school announced Ed Reynolds, former NFL executive and player for the New England Patriots and New York Giants, as the new athletic director.[3] [4]

Fine arts

HGCS fine arts program includes offerings in band, photography, dance, drama, visual arts, choir, and a variety of instrumental ensembles.
