Current Theories:

The currently beliefs among Spawn fans are that MoM is either Jesus Christ, God or Satan. The absence of these characters, combined with subtle hints in the book have left fans theorizing, and with good support, in one of these three directions.

Another theory holds that MoM is linked to Greenworld, as evidenced in his appearance to Christopher's mother, his fan nickname "MoM" (ie: Mother Earth) and the fact that he knows information that appears to be unknown to Heaven and Hell.

A retcon of Cog?

The following is a commonly held myth among Spawn fans. The character appears to have been the subject of a retcon by McFarlane, and has been replaced by The Man of Miracles, a character who looks like the disputed Miracleman. This is simply false. Man of Miracles was a planned addition to the Spawn cast prior to Cog's "departure," but was originally supposed to be Miracleman himself, and was supposed to fill the "wisened sage and mentor" void left by Cog's betrayal. The legal issues surrounding that character forced McFarlane to have to retcon Miracleman into Man of Miracles. Cog is still shown to be active, though not referenced by name in the Spawn universe and all of his actions have been left intact. No retcon of Cog to Man of Miracles actually occurred and insistence to the contrary shows a lack of understanding by many as to what a retcon actually is.
