Todd Gurley (born August 3, 1994) is an American football running back for the Georgia Bulldogs. He is considered one of the best running backs in his class.[1]

Early years

Gurley attended Tarboro High School in Tarboro, North Carolina. As a senior in 2011 he was the North Carolina Associated Press Player of the Year after totalling 2,600 yards and 38 touchdowns.[2] Gurley helped his team win the 2A North Carolina state championship, rushing for 242 yards and four touchdowns in the championship game against Lincolnton High School.[3] In the semifinals, Lincolton had shut down the state's leading rusher, Thomasville's Shaquan Johnson, who entered the game with 3,083 yard rushing.[4]

Track and field

Gurley was also a hurdler and sprinter for the school's track & field team. He competed in the 110-metres hurdles at the 2011 World Youth Championships in Athletics, where he placed 3rd in the prelims with a career-best time of 13.86 seconds,[5] but finished 15th overall in the semifinals.[6] Also a top competitor in the 100 meters, he ran a personal-best time of 10.70 seconds in the prelims of the 2011 NCHSAA 2A State Track Meet, placing 2nd.[7]

In the spring of 2013, Gurley joined the Georgia Bulldogs indoor track team. He competed in the the 60-meter hurdles, and recorded the seventh-fastest time in school history at 8.12 seconds, to take sixth at the VT Elite Meet.[8]

College career

As a true freshman in 2012, Gurley rushed for 1,385 yards on 222 carries with 17 touchdowns.[9][10] Against Georgia Southern, Gurley became the second true freshman in Georgia history to rush for 1,000 yards, the only other being Herschel Walker in 1980.[11] After his outstanding freshman campaign, Gurley was named First-Team All-SEC by the Associated Press.[12] Gurley was one of two true freshman running backs to accomplish this in 2012, the other being T. J. Yeldon of Alabama.

2012

Gurley (6-1, 218 lbs) began the season starting behind redshirt sophomore Ken Malcome, but quickly took center stage in Georgia's running game by rushing for 100 yards off 8 carries in the season opener on September 1, 2012—a 45-23 win over Buffalo. Gurley began the game with a 10-yard TD run in the first quarter and five minutes later added a 100-yard kickoff return for a score. Later on with 8:13 left in the game, Gurley raced 55 more yards to paydirt which extended Georgia's lead to 45-16 over the Buffalo Bulls.[13]

Gurley received his first start of his career on September 8 in Georgia's road matchup with the Missouri Tigers who had just joined the Southeastern Conference. He rushed 11 times for 68 yards in #7 Georgia's 41-20 win over Missouri in a game in which the Bulldogs found themselves behind 17-9 in the 3rd quarter. Gurley scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter to support UGA's 24 unanswered points in the 2nd half.[14]

From there, Gurley's Bulldogs rolled to a 5-0 start—all in the month of September—as the freshman Gurley heavily assisted in routs or big wins over Florida Atlantic (56-20), Vanderbilt (48-3), and Tennessee (51-44). Gurley had 11 rushes for 111 yards that included a 38 yard TD run in UGA's victory over FAC on September 15, and a week later he bookended Georgia's win over Vandy with touchdowns as the latter of the two came from 29 yards out with just a minute left in the 4th quarter. Gurley gained 130 yards on 16 carries against the Commodores.[15][16]

Georgia's Bulldogs reached the No. 5 ranking nationally by the AP Poll after Gurley ran smash-mouth football (24 carries, 130 rushing yards, 3 TDs) against the Volunteers on September 29 as UGA led 51-37 going into the 4th quarter. Gurley received much help in the 7-point win over the Vols from his fellow true freshman running back Keith Marshall who scored on long touchdown runs of 75 and 72 yards during the contest.[17]

Georgia hit a dip in its season when the Bulldogs faced #6 ranked South Carolina on the road on October 6, 2012. Gurley was contained by South Carolina's Jadeveon Clowney-led defense as he finished with just 39 yards rushing on 13 carries. The Connor Shaw-led Gamecock offense generated 392 total yards offensively as South Carolina won the game 35-7. Gurley's Bulldogs dropped to 5-1 on the year and 3-1 in the SEC Conference after the road loss.[18]

The remainder of Gurley's and the University of Georgia's regular season was one of redemption as the Bulldogs blasted their way to six consecutive victories as the stretch of wins started off with a road trip to Lexington, Kentucky on October 20 and ended up with a home matchup on November 24 with Georgia's in-state rival – Georgia Tech. Along the way, Gurley rolled up more statistics and more numbers. Georgia got past scrappy Kentucky to begin the 6-game winning streak in a close one, 29-24. Gurley's talented quarterback Aaron Murray led the way by throwing for 427 yards and 4 touchdowns while Gurley himself ran for a modest 47 yards off 12 rushes against the Wildcats.[19]

During the Florida game, which was played in Jacksonville, Fla., Todd Gurley came into his own by pushing and shoving his way through the Gators' vaunted defense (Florida's defense allowed just 94.5 rushing yards per game in 2012) for 118 rushing yards off 27 carries. This included Gurley opening up the scoring that afternoon by racing into the end zone with the pigskin from 10 yards out during the first quarter as he performed the "Gator chomp" afterwards. Gurley's celebration in the end zone sparked a 17-9 victory over the 3rd-ranked Florida Gators as his teammate wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell made the game's most decisive play with 7:11 left in the contest—by catching an Aaron Murray pass and bolting 45 yards to paydirt.[20]

The remainder of the regular season was a series of routs for UGA as Gurley's 'Dogs got past Ole Miss (37-10), Auburn (38-0), Georgia Southern (45-14), and Georgia Tech (42-10) in blowout fashion. Gurley had 18 rushes for 117 yards against Ole Miss and also caught a pass for 23 yards against the Rebels on November 3.[21] Next came Auburn on November 10, as Georgia traveled to Jordan-Hare Stadium to face the Tigers. Gurley broke loose on a 62-yard run early in the contest and finished with 105 rushing yards off only 8 totes that included a 6-yard touchdown run that happened with 5:09 left in the 2nd quarter. After the win over Auburn, Georgia had a home matchup with nearby Georgia Southern on November 17. The game was never close as Georgia grabbed a 17-7 halftime lead and finished with a 45-14 victory over the Eagles. Gurley opened up the scoring in the 1st quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run and finished with 68 yards rushing on 15 carries.[22]

Coach Mark Richt's Georgia (11-1, ranked 3rd in the country) finished the regular season with in-state rival Georgia Tech at home in Athens, Georgia on November 24. The 6-1, 218-pound Gurley took charge early by scoring on touchdown runs of 3 and 1 yards as Georgia led 14-3 at the first quarter stop. With a balanced attack (215 passing yards, 164 rushing yards), UGA took a 28-3 lead into the locker room at halftime. Gurley finished with 97 yards rushing on 12 carries and the two TDs as Georgia defeated the Yellow Jackets, 42-10.[23]

Gurley's regular season stats after 12 games had him rushing for 1,138 yards off of 176 rushes and a lofty average of 6.5 yards per carry. He had 14 rushing touchdowns with his longest run from the line of scrimmage for the season covering 55 yards. Gurley also caught 12 passes for 110 yards in those 12 games.

With Georgia's successful 7-1 record in the SEC East Division, they reached the SEC Championship Game to face perennial powerhouse #2 Alabama (11-1) in the Georgia Dome on December 1, 2012. In a game which truly turned into a nail-biter, Gurley managed to find the goal line twice as he scored from 3 yards out and from 10 yards out. The latter of those two touchdowns came with 12:09 left in the game which gave Georgia a slim 28-25 lead. However, Alabama's wide receiver Amari Cooper answered Gurley's TD run by catching a 45 yard touchdown pass from A.J. McCarron that came with just 3:15 left to play—as this gave Bama its lead and the win as the Crimson Tide would soon go on to win their 3rd national championship in four years after they defeated Notre Dame, 42-10, on January 7, 2013. Gurley finished the game with Alabama by rushing for 122 yards off 23 carries and two TDs against a very tough defensive team (Alabama's defense gave up just 76.4 rushing yards per game in 2012).[24]

After the SEC title game loss, Georgia (11-2) was invited to play the University of Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando, Fla. on January 1, 2013. Even though Georgia grabbed a quick lead at 9-0, Nebraska—led by Rex Burkhead (140 rushing yards) and Ameer Abdullah (48 rushing yards)—took control early and held a slim 24-23 lead at the half. Gurley's big moment in the game came with 10:33 remaining in the 2nd quarter as he scored off a 24-yard TD run. After Nebraska stretched its lead to 31-23 off a Rex Burkhead 2-yard TD run, the Georgia Bulldogs rolled offensively as QB Aaron Murray connected on two long touchdown passes to WR Chris Conley and on a shorter 24 yard TD pass to RB Keith Marshall as UGA pulled away in the 4th quarter of the contest. Gurley finished with 125 yards and a touchdown off 23 carries against the Cornhuskers.[25]

Gurley's Bulldogs ended the season ranked #3 at 12-2 as he had a very successful freshman campaign by rushing for 1,385 yards and 17 touchdowns off 222 carries. He also caught 16 passes for 117 yards that included a longest reception of 23 yards in 14 games. Gurley finished the 2012 season by having 1,745 total yards off rushing yards, pass receptions, and kickoff returns that included him averaging 124.6 all-purpose yards a game.[26]

2013

In Georgia's season opener (which was played on August 31) at Clemson's Memorial Stadium, Gurley lead the Bulldogs with 154 rushing yards, a career high, on 12 carries and 2 touchdowns. Even though the Bulldogs lost the game 38-35, Gurley had an impressive performance against Clemson which included a 75-yard touchdown run that happened early in the first quarter. On a night where there were 22 scouts on hand, Gurley was widely considered the best player on the field. This led to his first Offensive Player of the week award of the season, in the SEC.
