Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is a 2014 indie point-and-click survival horror video game developed by Scott Cawthon, and the second installment of the Five Nights at Freddy's series. The game centers on the fictional pizzeria restaurant Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, where the player takes the role of a night security guard who must defend against the malfunctioning/supposedly haunted animatronic characters by tracking their every movement throughout the facility using security cameras.[1]

Gameplay

The player must survive the night shift, lasting from midnight to 6:00 a.m. (approximately 8 to 9 minutes of real time, 4–5 minutes on the mobile and tablet editions), without being attacked by the animatronics roaming the facility. The player, who sits in an office and is unable to move, is given access to a network of security cameras throughout the facility to track the movement of the animatronic robots. Unlike the previous game, the sequel (or prequel) features a total of 11 animatronics with various movement patterns; however, most of the characters' movements take place off-screen. The camera feeds are dimly lit and distorted, and the cameras do not cover certain areas of the building, most notably the two air vents and the hallway that leads into the office. The player cannot leave the office or seal off any of these three entrances, but can put on a Freddy Fazbear mask to ward off the animatronics, and can also turn on lights over the air vents to check for any that are crawling in. This does not stop all animatronics though.[2]

In a departure from the previous game, the power supply for the cameras and vent lights is no longer limited, and the player is provided with a flashlight that can be used to check the hallway and darkened areas of the other rooms. The flashlight does have a limited battery life; if it runs out, the player becomes vulnerable to attack. In addition, a music box in one room must be kept wound up and playing throughout the night, or else a marionette puppet in that room will emerge and rush to the office, killing the player.

As the title suggests, the game has five levels comprising five "nights" in the game, which increase in difficulty. Completion of the game unlocks an even more difficult 6th Night level, and completion of this level opens up a "Custom Night" level editor, which allows the player to adjust the AI difficulty of the individual characters (with the exception of the marionette) or play one of 10 preset challenges.

Unlike the first game where Freddy can't kill you on night 1 and 2 and maybe 3, he can kill you in any night.

On the first night Toy Bonnie, then Toy Chica, and then Toy Freddy will move.

Custom Night

Unlike the previous game, this game's Custom night features 10 preset modes of difficulty for various groups of the animatronics. The 10 modes are:[3]

1) 20/20/20/20: The original Custom Night, with the four original animatronics all on 20.

2) New and Shiny: The new versions of the four original animatronics, plus BB, all on 10.

3) Double Trouble: Both the old and the new Bonnie on 20, plus the old Foxy on 5.

4) Night of Misfits: Mangle and BB on 20, and Golden Freddy on 10.

5) Foxy Foxy: Foxy and Mangle on 20.

6) Ladies Night: Both the old and new Chica, and Mangle, on 20.

7) Freddy's Circus: Both the old and new Freddy on 20, plus Golden Freddy, Foxy, and BB on 10.

8) Cupcake Challenge: All 10 animatronics on 5.

9) Fazbear Fever: All 10 animatronics on 10.

10) Golden Freddy: All 10 animatronics on 20

Death Minigames

During gameplay, the player's death may lead to the start of a crude, 8-bit minigame instead of the usual "Game Over" screen. All four games are controlled using the basic "W, A, S, D" movements, and see the player controlling either Freddy, The Puppet, or Foxy.

Save Them

The player controls Freddy by using the W, A, S, D (movement), up, down, left, and right keys (facing different directions), and seems to have to follow a figure resembling The Puppet. Once arriving at a certain room with the Puppet, the game abruptly cuts to static and ends. The player can choose not to follow the Puppet and instead receive an identical ending by encountering Golden Freddy at random, however sometimes resulting in an abrupt end to the mini-game following the red static then taking the player back to the title screen. While the player is walking, letters can be clearly heard called out at regular intervals, spelling out S-A-V-E-T-H-E-M. There are several variations of this minigame in which the player starts out in different rooms, those including the Office and Parts/Service. The Mangle also appears in a room near the bottom of the layout, where touching it will cause the game to end in red static.

Very rarely during this minigame, a purple figure holding what appears to be a phone will appear at the end of the room the player has entered. The figure will follow Freddy, until coming into contact with him. Blue static instead of red will then cover the screen, flashing the words "You can't" at the bottom left hand corner of the screen. The game will then crash.

Give Gifts, Give Life

The player will play as The Puppet. Instructions at the top read "Give Gifts" which is completed by approaching four small figures that look like dead children. Once the gifts are all given out and the player returns to the middle of the room, the text on the top of the screen will change to "Give Life," and the player must approach each of them again, resulting in the four original animatronics' masks appearing on the heads of the children, possibly implying they are being stuffed in an animatronic suit. All throughout this sequence, multiple letters are called out, spelling "H-E-L-P-T-H-E-M." When completed, the player will receive Golden Freddy's jumpscare, ending the minigame. Upon close inspection, a fifth body may be seen in the middle of the room right before the jumpscare.

Take Cake to the Children

Playing as Freddy, the player has to take cake to six kids. Walking to each child makes them turn green, and leaving them alone for too long makes them turn red. Meanwhile, a child stands outside crying. As the player tries to serve cake to all six kids, a purple car will pull up outside and a purple person gets out, then proceeds to kill the sad child (who actually appears to stop crying and then cry even harder while this is happening). The sad child will then turn gray when dead. All the while, letters are called out, spelling "S-A-V-E-H-I-M", and the player begins to move slower and slower. If the player is able to make all the children green at the same time, the player will be unable to move and will be forced to watch the children turn red. When the minigame ends, the Puppet will jumpscare the player.

Foxy Minigame

Playing as Foxy, the player walks out of what appears to be the curtained Pirate Cove and into a room with children, who celebrate his arrival. All five children appear to be happy, with the bottom one offset so it looks sad due to the black bars. The player is then returned to the curtained area and has to repeat this twice. On the third playthrough, the purple man who killed the crying child in the Take Cake to the Children minigame (see above) is seen standing in the corner of the starting room, smiling. Chupaneeki! When Foxy approaches the children, they seem lifeless. The minigame then ends with Foxy's jumpscare.

Plot

Jeremy Fitzgerald begins working at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza as a security guard on the night shift, midnight to 6 AM. The previous guard was moved to the day shift after complaining that the animatronic characters repeatedly attempted to get into his office. Each night, Jeremy receives a phone call from an unnamed character employed by Fazbear Entertainment (colloquially referred to as "Phone Guy" which is due to him calling every night); game play mechanics and traces of the plot are slowly revealed through these calls.

He explains that the four old animatronics that they originally started out with - Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie the Bunny, Chica the Chicken, and Foxy the Pirate Fox - were deemed "too ugly," and are thus being slowly disassembled while four new animatronics - Toy Freddy, Toy Bonnie, Toy Chica, and the Mangle (a female version of Foxy) - are being built. There's also a child-like animatronic called "BB the Balloon Boy," and a marionette puppet that performs in puppet shows for the children and give them presents. The man explains that the animatronics, which wander freely around the pizzeria at night, may mistake a person at night for an endoskeleton without its costume on, and since that's against the rules, they may respond by forcefully stuffing the person in question inside a Freddy suit. Thus, the night guard is given a Freddy mask to don in order to fool the animatronics.[4] However, the Freddy mask will not fool the old Foxy, so he recommends that Fitzgerald use the hallway flashlight by repeatedly flashing it on and off in order to temporarily blind Foxy and drive him away. In addition, the one other animatronic that is not fooled by the mask is the marionette. The man on the phone informs Fitzgerald that the marionette is kept in place in the showroom by the use of a music box that must be kept wound up during the entire night, because if it runs out and stops playing, the marionette will be drawn to wherever it hears human-like activity, and thus will attack the guard regardless of whether or not he is wearing the mask.

As the game progresses, more of the storyline is revealed through the predecessor's phone messages. First, it is revealed that there are apparently rumors going around about the pizzeria itself being haunted (which the man on the phone promptly dismisses). He also explains that the animatronics' AI systems have a special, state-of-the-art identification system installed in them that is able to detect child predators "a mile away," in order to better protect the children. However, on the fourth night, he remarks that the animatronics have started acting strange around all adults, simply staring at them ominously while working just fine with the children. Then, as of the fifth night, the man reveals that the pizzeria is on lockdown, and no one is allowed in or out of the building, "especially previous employees." He then adds that there is finally an opening in the day shift that Fitzgerald wants, thus implying that it was the previous night guard, who was moved to the day shift, who was fired. On the sixth night, in a noticeably panicked tone, the man informs Fitzgerald that the pizzeria is temporarily closed since someone stole a spare yellow Freddy suit from the storage room. Nevertheless, one final event is scheduled for the next day; a birthday party. He tells Fitzgerald that he will be moved to the day shift during that event, since they found a new replacement for the night shift, and that he is to stay close to the animatronics at all times to make sure that they don't hurt anyone. He ends on a final note by adding that the management is attempting to get back in contact with the owner of the original restaurant that Freddy's replaced, which was apparently a family business named "Fredbear's Family Diner," but have had no success so far.

At the end of the game after the sixth night, Fitzgerald receives his check, which is dated November 12, 1987 - thus revealing the game to actually be a prequel to the original.[5] In addition, a newspaper clipping reveals that, after only two weeks of being open, the pizzeria is closing after a disaster took place the day of the birthday party, possibly a reference to the bite of '87 due to the fact of the check dated in 1987.
