"Heroes"
Song

"Heroes" is a pop song by Austrian singer Conchita Wurst. It was released on November 8, 2014. Conchita revealed to fans via Facebook page about release of a new single on the 18th October and the 20th of the same month reveals the song title Heroes. The song will be released on the upcoming debut album by Conchita.

Promotion and composition

Musically "Heroes" is a departure from Wurst's operatic pop style known from former singles like Rise Like a Phoenix or That's What I Am. The composition still incorporates classical elements but in a more minimal way. In contrast the percussion part is stronger than in her previous work. The song is mainly built of elements from baroque pop combined with parts of soul pop and world beat, therefore she pointed "Heroes" out as a whole different genre "Ein ganz anderes Genre“.[1] It lasts for 3:43 minutes with support by a backing choir. Wurst called the song "... cooler than I thought I could sound like".[2] "Heroes" content deals with love, self empowerment and probably battle against intolerance in terms of phrases like "love is like a battle cry and we'll shine till our colors light up the sky and we'll dance to the sound of our battle cry".[3] A Little Bit Of Pop Music desrcibes "Heroes" composition "Wurst gained huge success with the big, dramatic ballad ‘Rise Like A Phoenix’, that reminded a bit of a bond soundtrack, especially the ones by Shirley Bassey. ‘Heroes’ sounds whole lot more contemporary compared to this. Luckily, this does not mean Conchita’s big voice and a fair bit of drama is gone though. The new single could still be described as a midtempo track with a vivacious chorus, but especially the production and instrumentation is quite different to anything she has done before. It sounds contemporary and fresh, maybe even something Ryan Tedder could have written for one of the big pop girls. The production is very detailed with all sorts of little vocal background sounds which make the song stand out a little more. The production is more than servicable in bringing to the front the beautiful melody in ‘Heroes’."[4] "Heroes" was released to high anticipations[5] on November 8 with its first live performance on Wetten, dass..? in Graz.[6] The release date lays two days behind her birthday: "Conchita Wurst has released “Heroes”, bringing to an end months of anticipation for her countless fans around the world. The song comes two days after her birthday, when she published a video thanking her fans for their support and talking about the song. It was directly made available to stream on multiple platforms.[7] On November 8 she also released the lyric video on Youtube.[8] Wurst proceeded to begin work on an album influenced by "mature ladies" like Cher, Shirley Bassey, and Tina Turner.[9]

Critical reception

"Heroes" has received generally positive reviews so far.[10] Fans and critics alike complimented on the genre shift from Rise Like a Phoenix to Heroes.[11] Hollywood-News applauded the quality of "Heroes" while writing of Wetten, dass..? "With great power also is the world premiere of “Heroes”, the new song by Conchita Wurst, expected: “I’m glad I can be there yet, so to speak before the last impressions, for I have seen the show as a child!”[12] A Little Bit Of Pop Music reviewed "Heroes" generally well writing "Although the song starts out quite calm, Conchita would not be Conchita if there wasn’t a big note in the middle-eight. This is followed by the last chorus where she slightly changed the melody, which is absolutely the best moment of the track. ‘And we shine till the colors light up the sky’ gets to me every time. ‘Heroes’ shows Conchita can do more than slightly old fashioned ballads and she proves she is definitely not a one day fly. This makes me all the more excited for her debut album."[13] All Noise also applauded the song "although “Heroes” isn’t probably the best power ballad we have ever listened, it is still a great track which has all the potential to find its place among chart-topping tracks. When you listen to this track you will feel the power and lift that you expect from Conchita Wurst’s music. The chorus makes it even more uplifting. Despite high-pitch delivery and burst of energy, Conchita sings it so effortlessly that it naturally sounds brilliant."[14]

Music video

The official music video has been released for stream on Youtube on November 21. The video version is slightly different using more string instruments and heavier backing vocals. It deals mainly with war, self empowerment and love by using strong images.[15]
