The shooting of Tony Terrell Robinson Jr. occurred on March 6, 2015, in Madison, Wisconsin. Robinson, a 19-year-old biracial man, was fatally shot by Matt Kenny, 45, a white Madison police officer.[1]

Event

The shooting took place at 6:30 p.m., on March 6, 2015. Officer Matt Kenny responded to reports of a man jumping in and out of traffic. Kenny followed the man to the residence where an alleged battery had taken place. According to Madison Chief of Police Mike Koval, the man attacked Kenny there. During the confrontation, Kenny drew his weapon and shot the suspect, claiming that he fired in self-defense. He performed CPR on the suspect, who was taken to a hospital but later died.[2] He was later identified as 19-year-old Tony Robinson, a graduate from Sun Prairie High School.

Background

Court documents show that Robinson was on probation after pleading guilty to armed robbery in 2014.[citation needed] The Daily Mail reported that in September, a family friend had written to Robinson's defense attorney warning that he faced a choice between a middle-class life and "the 'gangsta' path", and that a felony conviction and prison sentence would push him further into the world of gangs.[citation needed]

Aftermath

The shooting led to protests under the banner of Black Lives Matter, the hashtag for protests against racial disparities in the police force, which originated in Ferguson, Missouri, following the police shooting of Michael Brown.[3] Some 1,500 protesters, many of them students from Sun Prairie High School and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, filled the state capitol on March 9 to protest Robinson's death, yelling the "Hands up, don't shoot" chant through the capital building.[4]

The Wisconsin Department of Justice will investigate the Robinson shooting, as part of a requirement in Wisconsin law.[5] Robinson's uncle said that the family has faith in the Division of Criminal Investigation to "handle [the investigation] with integrity".[6]
