João Pedro Cavaco Cancelo (born 27 May 1994) is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays for Spanish club Valencia CF as a right back.

Club career

Benfica

Cancelo started his football career at F.C. Barreirense. Three years later, he joined S.L. Benfica's youth system at the age of 14, and progressed through the youth teams as a first-choice right back, although also playing as a left back.

On 28 July 2012, Cancelo debuted for Benfica in a friendly against Gil Vicente F.C. where he played the full 90 minutes as a right back.[1]

Despite playing with Benfica B, Cancelo touted as a possible replacement to Maxi Pereira in the first-team.[2] While playing for the reserves, he played occasionally for the Juniors team, and on 18 May 2013, he scored the two decisive goals in a 2-1 win against Rio Ave, that proclaimed Benfica as Portuguese Juniors Champions.[3]

In 25 January 2014, Cancelo made his debut with the main squad, in a League Cup match against Gil Vicente, coming on as a late substitute in the 1–0 home win.[4] Benfica went on to win the competition on that year.

Valencia

On 20 August 2014, Cancelo joined Valencia CF on a one-year loan deal.[5] He debuted in his new team on 25 September 2014, against Córdoba in a 3–0 home win.[6]

On 25 May 2015, Cancelo joined Valencia in a permanent deal until 30 June 2021.[7][8]

International career

Cancelo represented Portugal U19 in the 2012 UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship.[9]

In the following year, Cancelo represented Portugal again at the 2013 UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship [10] and in the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup reaching the Round of 16.

Cancelo represented Portugal at the 2014 Toulon Tournament.[11]
