Portrait of the Artist's Father (Slovenian: Portret očeta) is a painting by the Italian artist Giuseppe Tominz from 1848.[1][2]

Description

The picture is painted in oil on canvas and has dimensions of 90 x 74.5 cm.

The painting has been a part of the collection of the National Gallery of Slovenia in Ljubljana, since 1926.[2]

Analysis

Jozsef Tomink lived and worked in Austria-Hungary. It is one of the most famous Italian portrait painters from the Biedermeier period, featuring art of the bourgeoisie, with the escape to idyllic and private life, and reproduction of the present. The most characteristic in his art are realistic portraits. The painting represents a portrait of the artist's own father on the occasion of his 80th birthday. The painting depicts a festive costume sitting on a chair by the table. With his left hand he holds a small portrait of a woman. The portrait is entirely in the style of naturalism and is devoid of any idealization.[2]
