Seth Ajayi was born on 16 May 1944. He attended Ahmadu Bello University, University of Edinburgh (UK) and the University of Ibadan.

He earned B.Sc. in zoology and an Msc and Ph.D. in Wildlife Conservation/Ecology.

In 1974, Seth Ajayi became First African to Obtain a Ph.D. In the field of Wildlife Conservation, On the 1st October 1980, he became the First African Professor of Wildlife Conservation at the University of Ibadan.

He created the first African Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Management with full separate degree programmes in Wildlife and Fisheries Management.

He was the Pioneer Head, Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Management, University of Ibadan, 1981-1988.

He was Pioneer Dean, College of Environmental Resources Management, University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.

He was a Consultant to United Nations / Food and Agricultural Organization UN/FAO from 1979-2003.

Seth Ajayi received the "Global 500 Roll of Honor" now known as "Champions of the Earth" award of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) for Outstanding Practical Achievements in Environmental Protection in 1994

In 2013, was conferred by President Goodluck Jonathan the Prestigious Nigeria National Order of Merit. This award is the highest National Prize for academic and intellectual attainment and also the highest award the Nigerian Government can present to it citizens.

Professor Ajayi has published over 100 papers, articles and books.
