On November 9th, 2016, protests occurred in Oakland California against the election of Donald Trump. While originally peaceful, these protests became violent, with protestors lighting trash cans and cars and a building on fire and smashing store windows and throwing bottles at police. 30 protesters were arrested, 3 officers were injured.

Background

Leading up to the election, there were warning signs of impending violence in the United States. Many Donald Trump fans had threatened riots and insurrection in the event he lost.[7] Police in New York City were stationed to keep fans of Trump and Clinton apart since the two headquarters were only blocks apart. In Los Angeles, riot police were mobilized and preparation for possible unrest if Trump won.[8] Leading up to the election there had been violence nationwide, such as an RNC headquarter firebombing in North Carolina[9], and a black church arson attacked in Greenville, Mississippi[10]. There had been several unrest incidences earlier in the election, such as a riot in Albuquerque outside a Trump rally and in San Jose where protesters assaulted Trump supporters.

Riot

Morning November 9th: When the election began turning in favor of Donald Trump, protests began on college campuses such as UCLA[11]. By 4 A.M., a large group of protesters had marched from Berkley to nearby Oakland. While the protest started out peaceful, it took a violent turn in Oakland, with protesters smashing windows, overturning garbage cans and lighting dumpsters and piles of debris on fire in the street[12].

November 9th-November 10th: Marchers returned the following night to Oakland, and this time the demonstrations were larger and more violent. A Trump pinata was set on fire, and several stores were vandalized and looted[13][14]. Large bonfires were set up and down city streets, City Hall was stormed and a Federal Building was set on fire[15].

Aftermath

Several cars had windows smashed and burned debris littered streets. The Federal Building burned down is still closed. Local police and officials blamed radical anarchists and communists for the violence seen in Oakland and nearby Berkeley[16]. Overall, 30 people were arrested and 3 officers were injured in the riots. No civilians were harmed.
