Mike Bivins is a journalist based out of Portland, Oregon.[1]

He was interviewed by the Washington Post about the riot and protests that engulfed Portland shortly after Donald Trump was announced as having won the 2016 presidential election.[2][3]

Bivins also covered a controversial open-carry event where an effigy of Oregon Governor Kate Brown was hung and then burned on the steps of the Oregon Statehouse.[4][5] Eugene Weekly, for whom Bivins is a former intern and current freelancer, wrote in its Slant column that Bivins was one of the few reporters to cover the effigy burning incident, while most news outlets in the state were caught "flatfooted" [6].

In an interview with Spokane's alt-weekly, The Inlander (newspaper), Bivins said that via his use of social media applications such as Periscope (app) he is able to compete directly with large news organizations, some of whom have purchased his footage.[7] Bivins is quoted in The Inlander as saying the following: "I've put my phone in my mouth," Bivins says. "And I'll crawl up onto high spots and get a better vantage point easier, because I don't have a big camera weighing me down."

Bivins is also known for capturing Periscope footage of now jailed conservative blogger Michael Strickland, who pointed a loaded gun at several people at a Black Lives Matter protest in Portland.[8][9]
