-Phorum is an [[Opensource|open source]] [[internet forum|message board]] system written in PHP. Some reasons to choose Phorum are:

-In 1998 [http://dealmac.com/ dealmac.com] needed a forum.  Brian Moon, a part time employee of the site owners [http://dealnews.com dealnews.com], looked at the options available.  None of the software available at that time met the requirements of the companies CEO.  In April of 1999, Brian hacked together three scripts that would met the basic needs of [http://dealmac.com/ deal-mac.com].  An email was sent to the PHP mailing list seeking help in testing.  Anyone that helped debug it and make it better could have the code. Within 30 days the code was good enough to put in use on [http://dealmac.com/ dealmac.com].  It was called WebThreads, but it was discovered  that another project already used that name. The name Phorum came from combining PHP and forum to make Phorum.  From there, Phorum took off.  It was installed at sites as large as WB.com.  Eventually, it was released under the GPL.  Later that would be changed to the Phorum license, a BSD style license.
-As dealmac.com grew, the demands for the software grew. In 1998, Brian became a full time employee of [http://dealnews.com/ dealnews.com].  He was tasked with rewriting the software to add new features and make speed a bigger priority.  Brian had already begun writing Phorum 2.0, but it did not have speed as a priority.  So, the new code for [http://dealnews.com/ dealnews.com] became Phorum 3.0.  The owners of [http://dealnews.com/ dealnews.com] were very open to [[Opensource|open source]].  Initially, Phorum 3 was worked on primarily by Brian Moon with some help from Jason Birch of [http://www.barnonedrinks.com/ Bar-None Drinks].
-In 2001, Thomas Seifert of [http://www.mysnip.de MySnip.de] came on board.  He brought a new perspective to the application.  Thomas had built a free message board web site that used Phorum as its base.  He was running thousands of individual forums with 1000s of users all from one single install of Phorum.  Thomas' first major contribution was creating an internal user system in Phorum.  Before that, Phorum had relied on outside user systems for any type of logging in and profiles.
-With Thomas on board, Brian was freed to start work on the next version.  Version 4 was never realized due to several problems with the direction of the code.  Brian and Thomas took all the things they learned and started to apply them to version 5.  Version 5 was a 2 year labor of love.  Speed and extendibility were the focus of the application.  New features, such as private messaging, were added that brought it more inline with other offerings.  The module system was fully developed so that non-core features, such as avatars, user ranks, additional profile fields, etc., could be added on an as wanted basis.
-Phorum 5.1.x is the current stable branch as of this writing.  It was mostly a backend enhancement of Phorum 5.0.  The search functions were changed to be faster and more robust.  The posting flow was changed to make more sense and provide a more interactive experience.  The forum list was updated to be more modern and familiar to new users.
