Charlie Ngatai (born 17 August 1990) is a rugby union footballer who plays as a midfield back for the Template:Rut Chiefs in Super Rugby.[1]

Biography

Ngatai was born in Gisborne to Kirk and Lisa Ngatai.[2] He is of Ngati Porou and Te Whanau-a-Apanui iwi.[3] Ngatai attended Gisborne Boys' High School where he captained the First XV rugby team.[2]

In 2007 Ngatai attended the Sydney Youth Olympics as a sprinter where he competed in the 100m and 4 x 100m relay.[4]

Ngatai is father to two girls, Kerehi and Makaea.[2]

Professional career

In 2008, Ngatai made his first class provinicial debut at age 18 for Poverty Bay against Wanganui.[1] He made his ITM Cup debut the following year with Wellington Lions. In 2014 he shifted to Taranaki where he currently plays.[3]

In Super Rugby, Ngatai represented the Hurricanes from 2011, until shifting to the Chiefs as midfielder in 2013.[3] After sustaining a head knock against the Highlanders in May 2016, Ngatai missed the remainder of the 2016 Super Rugby season due to ongoing concussion symptoms. During this time he contemplated retiring from rugby,[5] however he returned to the professional game in May 2017.[6]

Ngatai made his Māori All Blacks debut on the European Tour in 2012. He was handed the captaincy for the first time during the 2014 tour of Japan. He also captained the Māori All Blacks against Fiji in Suva on 11 July 2015.[3]

In 2014 he was a nominee for the Tom French Memorial Maori Player of the Year at the Steinlager Rugby Awards.[3]

On 8 July 2015, Ngatai made his All Blacks debut in a one-off test against Samoa in Apia.[2][3]
