Agrium, Inc. engages in the production, marketing, and distribution of agricultural products and services, and nutrients for agricultural and industrial markets in the United States and Argentina. It operates through four segments: Retail, North America Wholesale, South America Wholesale, and Specialty Products. Retail segment provides fertilizers, crop protection products, seeds, and agronomic services to farmers. As of December, 31, 2005, this segment owned and operated 254 retail centers in the United States, Argentina, and Chile. North America Wholesale segment provides nitrogen-based fertilizers, sulphur, and phosphate-based fertilizers. This segment also engages in the ownership and operation of potash mine and production facility at Vanscoy, Saskatchewan, Canada, and a phosphate mine in Kapaskasing, Ontario, Canada. In addition, it owns and operates micronutrient facility at Reese, Michigan. South America Wholesale segment engages in the ownership and operation of nitrogen-based fertilizer plant in Bahia Blanca, Argentina. Specialty Products segment engages in the manufacture and sale of nitrogen fertilizers, fertilizer, and pest control products for professional turf market, including golf courses and lawn care companies; and for structural pest control industry, including pest control in residential and commercial structures in Canada. This segment markets its products through a network of distributors in Canada. The company was founded as Cominco Fertilizers, Ltd. in 1931 and changed its name to Agrium, Inc. in 1995. Agrium is headquartered in Calgary, Canada.
