Melbourne's biggest non-Queen's Birthday crowd in a long time?

Hi,

As you may know, Melbourne's next game is against Richmond and it is their home game, which (disregarding the terrible loss to Hawthorn today), if past years and results in the Anzac Eve matches are anything to go by, has the potential to draw a crowd of upwards to 70-80K.

Given the Tigers are the reigning premiers, I believe that such a large crowd would make this Melbourne's biggest home crowd outside of its annual Queen's Birthday clash against Collingwood (which it has contested since 2001) for a very long time. 85K attended the corresponding match (a Richmond home game on a Monday night) last year.

This year's Anzac Eve match is a Tuesday night, but I don't think this will impact the attendance in nine days' time.

Your thoughts please? MasterMind5991 (talk) 10:54, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MasterMind5991, sorry I totally forgot to reply to this. I agree that the fact the game is on a Tuesday night won't impact the crowd because it is a public holiday the next day which means it isn't a work/school night. I think unfortunately due to Melbourne's insipid effort against Hawthorn (I'm still not over it haha) that will probably reduce the crowd by about 10,000, i.e. I reckon if Melbourne won it could have been around 85-90,000, but I reckon there'll be some Melbourne supporters who will be so annoyed by Melbourne's effort last week that they won't want to potentially watch another effort like that against the reigning premiers. I'm not sure how big the crowd will be but it's definitely turning into a marquee game and I reckon some neutral supporters may go just because it's a big game. If it will be bigger than the Queen's Birthday game, I'm not 100% sure as Collingwood aren't going too badly this year, so if both sides are doing well I could see it going above 75,000 like it did in 2011. I'm expecting about 70-75,000 for Anzac eve. Flickerd (talk) 04:39, 18 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I also think the Queen's Birthday clash, which is the major highlight of Melbourne's AFL fixture, can draw another large crowd if both the Pies and Dees keep up their good form (last week's loss to the Hawks aside). The Dees-Tigers game is, to the best of my memory, the first match to be scheduled for a Tuesday night (apart from the match between Essendon and St Kilda in 1996 which had to be completed in this timeslot due to a lighting failure on the preceding Saturday night) for a very long time.
Also, some trivia: next year, the Anzac Eve match (Richmond's home game in 2019) will fall on a Wednesday night and it would make sense for it to start the round, as was the case in 2015 (Friday night). The Essendon vs Collingwood match would then be held on the Thursday afternoon and would thus be the second match in the round. Assuming the Anzac Eve match is retained until 2025, that will be the next year the match falls on a Thursday night. MasterMind5991 (talk) 10:54, 18 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Moving pages

Hello. I took care of your request at WP:RMTR, but just want to let you know, in case you don't already, that you can move pages yourself over a redirect as long as there haven't been any additional edits there yet. Station1 (talk) 19:08, 21 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know Station1, every time I had tried in the past it hadn't worked so I didn't think it was possible without additional tools, but thanks for the clarification. Flickerd (talk) 04:53, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
