Biography

Early life

Carter was born in Jamestown, New York. His father, Robert Gene Carter, is of Jewish descent and his mother, Jane Elizabeth Spaulding, is a Mayflower descendant of Welsh, Irish, German, English and 1/4 Native American ancestry. Carter's siblings include Angel, Leslie, Bobbie Jean, and singer Aaron. He also has an older half-sister named Ginger from his father's first marriage.

At the time of his birth, his parents were running a night club called the Yankee Rebel in Westfield, New York; a few years later, they moved to Tampa, Florida and managed a retirement home for senior citizens. Carter began auditioning for acting roles in the early 1990s, and appeared in an unbilled role in the film Edward Scissorhands (1990). After being a member of a children's band, he was spotted by producer Lou Pearlman and made a member of Backstreet Boys, a boy band that Pearlman was training and promoting at the time. After gaining a huge following in Europe and Asia, the group returned to the United States and garnered quite a reaction. To date, Carter has helped the group sell over 80 million albums.

Career

The Backstreet Boys became hugely popular in the late 1990s, and Carter gained fame, becoming known as the heart-throb of the group. Besides being arguably the most popular, yet one of the most talented member of the group, he was one of the main vocalists, having sung lead in parts of all of their singles to date except for their debut (We've Got it goin' on) and I'll Never Break Your Heart. He did a drum solo on tour occasionally and did some important backing harmonies including the fourth verse of Show Me The Meaning (supporting Kevin), and taking over the lead part soon thereafter.

In 1999, he was ranked #1 on the list of "Hottest Under 21" byTeen Scene Magazine and was named "The Biggest Teen Idol" by Teen People magazine. He was also named one of People magazines "50 Most beautiful People in the World" in 2000.

Carter's fame has created the career of his brother Aaron. Carter attempted a career as a solo singer in 2002, when he released a pop-rock solo album titled Now or Never. The album reached #17 on Billboard 200 and was certified Gold. Also in 2002 Carter was named "The Sexiest Man in the World" in CosmoGirl Magazine poll conducted by its readers, much to his own surprise.

Carter has also returned to his acting career. He appeared opposite Kevin Zegers in the 2004 horror film, The Hollow, and was slated to star in another horror film, Brew, but that project has since fallen through.

He has recently been back on tour with the Backstreet Boys, who are promoting a new album called Never Gone; their first single was "Incomplete" and their second is "Just Want You To Know", the third single is: "I Still" and the fourth is "Crawling Back To You". Their fifth single "Cash Whore" failed to make an impact on the billboard charts. Backstreet Boys' album "Never Gone" peaked at #3 in the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum. In fall 2005, they toured Europe.

Carter and his siblings star in a reality television show, House Of Carters, which premiered in October 2006 on E!. The series features all five Carter siblings reuniting to live in the same house, and will feature in-depth moments of their ups and downs of living in complete financial bliss.[1]

According to the Internet Movie Database, Carter often cites Bryan Adams as not only his idol, but biggest musical influence.

Personal life

In the past Carter had a relationship with Willa Ford, which ended after reports of possessiveness and jealousy on her part. He briefly dated Swedish model Izabelle Filling. Then he was linked with celebrity hotel heiress and hollywood starlet Paris Hilton, and by late 2003, the two were publicly dating. The relationship ended in July 2004 and he was stuck with a Paris tattoo that he got during their relationship; he later covered it with a skull and crossbones design. In late 2005, Carter was rumoured to be engaged to Chinese entertainer Bai Ling, but those rumors were never substantiated.

Carter's parents were divorced in 2003 and his father remarried Ginger Elrod on April 1, 2004. In June 7, 2005, Carter welcomed the birth of his half-brother, Kanden Brent Carter, from his father's new marriage; he also has a younger step-sister called Taelyn by his father's new wife. His mother remarried to a Mr. Holcomb on November 2, 2005.

On September 29, 2006, Carter told Howard Stern that he had lost his virginity to future sex offender Debra Lafave when they were classmates. [1]
