Catalonia was never independent as you can read in the The Treaty of Corbeil. This treaty was an agreement signed on 11 May 1258, in Corbeil (today Corbeil-Essonnes, in the region of Île-de-France) between Louis IX of France and James I of Aragon.

The French king, as the heir of Charlemagne, renounced feudal overlordship over the counties the March of Hispania part of the March of Gothia that remained within the geographical area that later became known as Catalonia.

If you can show one ancient text speaking of the "Catalanoaragonese crown" I settle in the matter, but it doesn't exist, because the term "Catalanoaragonese crown" has been invented in the last years, for promoting Catalonia as an old state, but as you can see in all that historic references it has never existed.

Further explaining:

What we want to reflect with this change its not to confuse people with the name of what was called the "Crown of Aragon" (thereby the line "referred by some modern historians"), we want to clarify that different names are currently used to refer to the Crown of Aragon. It is not a mistake to call it "Catalanoaragonese confederation" or "Catalanoaragonese crown", because what the name implies is that the crown was mainly composed between Catalan (Occupying more than two thirds of the mainland iberian territory) and Aragonese land, culture and people.

If we said: "The Crown of Aragon which was also referred to as Catalanoaragonese Crown" Then that would be mistakenly calling it by that name, but since we are just referring to the modern name and stating that it was given in the late years by historians, we aren't committing any mistake.

-Translated "According to the statement of the IEC, "both the Catalan-Aragonese Crown and the Catalan-Aragonese Confederation are commonly used among historians, regardless of their origin and always complementary and not alternative to Corona de Aragón, the same way they are used in other contexts the terms kingdom of Asturias, Castilian monarchy Castilian or Hispanic monarchy. For the IEC, "none of these terms ever had an official character, and no one accuses of misrepresenting the history of the historians who use them." [1]

I will kindly discuss any further changes regarding this matter. But i think we should stop editing the same line over and over, it would be better to just settle in a final edit that solves the dispute.
