Biomaterials is a weekly peer-reviewed scientific journal covering the physical, biological and chemical sciences involved in engineering biomaterials. It is published by Elsevier. The Editor-in-Chief is Prof. Kam W. Leong (Columbia University, USA),[1] while the managing editor is Dr. Chai Hoon Quek. Publishing formats include original research and review-type articles (reviews and leading opinion papers).

The journal is a leading journal in the field. According to Journal Citation Reports, its 2017 impact factor is 8.806, ranked top 1 in both Biomaterials (1/33) and Biomedical Engineering (1/78) categories.[2] Publishing in Biomaterials is therefore competitive; the journal's acceptance rate from 2015-2018 is around 15%.[3]

Coverage

The journal is relevant to areas such as cancer diagnosis and therapy, implantable devices, drug delivery systems, gene vectors, bionanotechnology and tissue engineering. The major research areas covered by the journal include:

  • Polymer synthesis and characterization
  • Drug and gene vector design
  • Biology of the host response, immunology and toxicology
  • Nanoscaled self assembly
  • Clinical applications (therapies of medical technology and regenerative medicine in all clinical disciplines)
  • Diagnostic systems

Editorial Board

Biomaterials currently has 14 associate editors handling the submission and the review process:[4]
