Pall Mall Barbers is a barbershop chain with six locations in London and one in New York City. The company is owned and managed by Richard Marshall.

The first Pall Mall Barbers store is located on a historic site at 27 Whitcomb Street, near Trafalgar Square London. Records indicate that the building has been a barber shop since the original Pall Mall Toilet Salon was established in 1896..[1] Marshall purchased the premises in 2005 and renamed it Pall Mall Barbers.[2]

Company history

Background

Pall Mall Barbers was founded by barber-turned-entrepreneur Richard Marshall in 2005. By that point Marshall had been working in the industry for nearly twenty having started as a part time cleaner and tea maker at the age of 12 in Hair By Vincenzo, in Bedford, a county town in Bedfordshire, England. He went on to work as a barber in numerous shops in London before converting the former Pall Mall Toilet Company into the original Pall Mall Barbers location at Trafalgar Square in 2005. Marshall expanded the brand from 1 store to 7, the most recent one being in New York City. [3]

History

Pall Mall Barbers was opened in late 2005 in London, 2 minutes away from Trafalgar Square. Marshall decided on the name after a serendipitous visit to the premises during negotiations in early 2005 when he stumbled upon an old business card on the floor. The business card had ‘Pall Mall Toilet Saloon’ printed on it which he discovered was once the name of the shop which stood there in the early 20th century.[4]

By the end of the 2000s leading into the 2010s the "wet shave" was experiencing a resurgence in popularity thanks to the introduction of replaceable blades in straight razors. [5] Following the success of his first store, Richard Marshall opened 3 more stores over the course of 8 years. This increase in visibility led to Pall Mall Barbers establishing brand awareness and attracted offers of collaborations such as Mastercard [6] the UEFA Champions League Final in Milan and product distribution partners in the USA [7]

By early 2018, Pall Mall Barbers expanded to a further two shops in London [8]bringing the total to 6 while plans for a debut international store in New York City were also underway.[9]

In December 2018, Pall Mall Barbers opened in New York City, at the Rockefeller Center. Located in the Concourse of the Rockefeller Center, the New York shop has the same traditional services as its English counterparts, such as hot-towels, haircuts, and beard trims. Rockefeller Center's visitor's guide describe's the shop as being "handsomely designed with rich woods, slate tiles and gleaming barbers' chairs." [10]

Products

In late 2014, Pall Mall Barbers launched a range of products which it sells online and in its stores. Some items have garnered mentions in style guides such as GQ Magazine who put the Pall Mall Barbers sea salt spray in a list of the 18 best new menswear items in the world. London lifestyle magazine, London The Inside described the "three step shaving system" as the heart of the Pall Mall Barbers product line. It consists of "an exfoliating pre-shave scrub, a hydrating shave cream, and a soothing post-shave balm". [11]

In 2017 The Resident, a luxury magazine based in London, included the Pall Mall Barbers "Sandalwood and Clove scent in their ‘5 of the Best Gents’ Scents for Valentine’s Day’ article. [12] Riddle Magazine is a UK focused lifestyle magazine, and they described the Pall Mall Barbers Sandalwood and Clove fragrance as a ‘great example of the longevity of woody notes… inspired by barbershop tradition of bay rum’.[13] In addition to the male grooming services found in their barber shops, Pall Mall Barbers also sells grooming products [14] such as shaving creams, brushes, and lotions. [15]

Royal Visit

On February 14, 2019 Prince William visited the Pall Mall Barbers Paddington location in London. According to People Magazine, Pall Mall Barbers is a member of the Lions Barber Collective, a group of barber shops that instructs its employees in how to recognize the signs of mental illness and help prevent suicide. [16] Prince William was quoted as saying: "This is very interesting. I'm trying to work out how you go about the issue of male suicide. People tell me that suicide is the rawest form of grief, there are so many questions unanswered that it is very hard to believe that anyone can get through it." [17]

To gain more insight Prince William met with both Richard Marshall, the founder of Pall Mall Barbers, and Lions Barber Collective founder Tom Chapman. [18]

The training provided to these barbers is called BarbersTalk. [19]
