Alona Rodeh is a visual artist. Her work spans a variety of media including sculpture, video, immersive installations using light and sound, photography, and publishing[1].

Biography

Rodeh received her BFA from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem in 2003, and participated in the BFA exchange program of the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. She completed her MFA at the Tel Aviv campus of Bezalel in 2009, spending a semester at the Sculpture Department of the Royal College of Art, London[2].

Rodeh's works have been exhibited at international institutions including MARTa Herford, Germany[3]; KAI10 | Arthena Foundation, Düsseldorf, Germany[4]; the Tel Aviv Museum of Art[5]; Künstlerhaus Bethanien[6]; CCA Tel Aviv[7]; Künstpalais Erlangen[8], Germany; Salzburger Kunstverein[9], Austria; and Plug In ICA[10] in Winnipeg, Canada, among others.

Work

Expanding on sculpture, and applying her experience as a set designer for television and theater[11], Rodeh creates her own brand of large-scale, often room-spanning installations. She combines light, movement, and sound in a manner she describes as performance without performers[1].

Individual sculptural elements in Rodeh's installations are outfitted with programmable enhancements to produce immersive environments in which sequences of light and darkness, as well as sound and silence, deliver time-based experiences[12].

Rodeh also creates short films, with or without live actors[11]. While the techniques she uses are contemporary and the content is coherent with her three-dimensional installations, the films do not include audible.

Rodeh collaborates with musicians and sound artists such as Rødhåd[13], Yoni Silver, Maya Dunietz[2], and Rona Geffen to produce unique aural components that are integral to her pieces. In the ongoing collaboration with new-media artist Rachid Moro[2], the interplay of techno-spatial elements has become central to her research and work.
