Well, the designers of the instrument discuss their instrument at some length on the 'official history page', but I suppose the clincher here would be examining the circuit board at [http://www.largesound.com/ashboryarticle/mod/schematic/| Largesound]. MIDI?

A friend of mine claims that the ashbory bass is actually a MIDI instrument, which a chip inside gets the signal and then transformes it into the "contra bass like sound" it has.
