St. Xavier's Higher Secondary School, is a Catholic school administered by the Madurai Province of the Society of Jesus. Founded in 1884, it is the oldest school in Tuticorin.[1] It is named after the Jesuit missionary to India, St. Francis Xavier.

History

It traces its origins to a parochial school built in the 1600s during Portuguese rule in Tuticorin.[2] In 1920 Xavier's had 563 pupils.[3] Xavier in Thoothukudi was registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act in 1960. In 1976 it was declared a minority institution.[4]


Extracurricular activities

The school has a Naval NCC cadets section.[5]
