On March 22, 2021, a shooting occurred at a King Soopers supermarket in Boulder, Colorado.[5][6][7][8] It was reported that five civilians and a member of the Boulder Police Department were killed, and as many as 10 other people were injured.[4] One person was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries relating to the shooting.[9]

Events

The shooting began shortly after 2:30 PM[10] local time when the perpetrator, without saying a word, entered the supermarket and began to shoot.[11] A family awaiting their COVID-19 vaccines witnessed the suspect shoot a woman, and proceeded to hide in a coat closet until their rescue.[12]

There were at least "a dozen gunshots," according to one source. Another source put the number at "probably about 15 to 20 shots, really fast" in addition to some before. One woman stated that she heard at least ten gunshots. [13]

Police could be heard over a loud speaker saying, "The entire building is surrounded; you need to surrender," and, "Come out with your hands up." [13]

Some civilians escaped through a back exit of the King Soopers. [13]

There was a another incident in another part of town of another armed and dangerous individual while the shooting was underway, but Boulder Police later revealed that they were unrelated. [13]

Victims

Law enforcement officials said that at least six people were killed in the shooting,[14] including a police officer.[2]

Suspect

A person of interest connected to the shooting has been taken into custody.[15] That person was injured and received medical care.[16]

Response

Up to 15 different agencies responded to the incident, including the Jefferson County SWAT, the FBI, the ATF, and local police.[17]
