James Tharpe was born in Clarksville Georgia to James and Sally Tharpe and spent most of his childhood in Duluth Georgia. Then, in 1994, he moved to Marathon Florida where he met Alan Norman, his long time best friend. While in Marathon, he began learning computer programming from his friend John Sykes, an interest that would eventually become his career. He also held jobs at McDonald's and Domino's Pizza and formed Used-Disks, Inc. - his first consulting company.

In 1997 he returned to Georgia to live with his father in Marietta. While in Marietta James met several friends he would later reunite with in 2005 and 2006 through the popular networking site, MySpace.

After graduating from Cumberland Christian Academy in 1998, James went to work for his father at Advanced Productivity Software, Inc. (APS). There, he became the company's webmaster, and eventually became the lead developer of DTE Everywhere. During his stint at APS, he developed close ties to the Borland Delphi community.

James's community involvement and notable achievements in developing web-based applications using Borland Delphi eventually led him, in 2002, to move to Las Vegas Nevada work for Developer Express as their Web Technologies Evangelist. Working at Developer Express turned out to be a great opportunity for James. There, he was able to greatly advanced his knowledge of programming techniques through the intense study of design patterns and enterprise application architecture.

After a little more than a year, however, James found it difficult to resist the draw of working for his father and decided to leave Developer Express and return to APS. He saw this as an opportunity to make a significant and positive impact for himself, his family, his friends, and the world around him. During his second stint at APS he met Daniel Gelbaum, his best friend of several years, and helped several of his friends find work there.
