Ervin Fodor is the recipient of the 2019 AstraZeneca Award from the Biochemical Society and a £2000[1] prize winnings. His lecture following the research that led to the prize was presented on 20-22 November 2019 in London, UK[2], entitled ‘Transcriptions in Health and Disease.’ He has an MSc in Chemical Technology (Slovak University of Technology), a DPhil in Pathology (Oxford University)[3] and a PhD (Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology at the University of Oxford).[4]

Fodor’s research team formulated a process to create a large scope of lab-housed influenza viruses.[5] This led to the development of the usage of reverse genetics to generate reproductive influenza viruses[6] following plasmid transfection.[7] This was then used to create a live attenuated influenza virus vaccine[8] for the UK National Childhood Flu Immunisation Programme.[9]

Fodor’s fellowships include:

  1. 2002: MRC Senior Non-Clinical Research Fellowships.
  2. 2011: RCUK Academic Fellowship, Professional Fellow Exeter College, Professor of Virology[10] and reader in Experimental Pathology.[11]
  3. 2020: Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.[12]
