On May 26, 2021, a mass shooting occurred at a Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) train yard, killing and injuring multiple people. The gunman is deceased.[2]

Events

At 6:34 a.m. PST (13:24 UTC), Santa Clara authorities received 9-1-1 calls about shots being fired at a VTA control center, which stored light rail trains and a maintenance yard. Multiple law enforcement officers and firefighters responded to the scene.[3] When they arrived, they found multiple people shot.[4] The shooting occurred at the maintenance yard, according to the VTA board chairman. At 7:12 a.m., the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office instructed the public to stay away from the area.[5]

At 8:00 a.m., the gunman was reported to be "down".[4] Light rail service was suspended for the day, but bus bridges were put in place to provide limited service.[3][6] The gunman apparently set his house on fire before the shooting, but no one was inside at the time.[4]
