Dalal Mughrabi
Dalal Mughrabi (Arabic دلال المغربي) (ca. 1959 - March 11, 1978) was a Palestinian woman who participated in the Coastal Road Massacre.
On the morning of March 11, 1978, Mughrabi and her Fedayeen unit of eleven members, including one other woman, landed on an Israeli beach, killed an American nature photographer named Gail Rubin and hijacked a bus along the coastal highway. The Israeli army pursued the bus until it was finally stopped. A long shooting battle between the Palestinians and the soldiers ensued. The Palestinians started shooting the passengers that attempted to escape. Eventually, Mughrabi blew up the bus which became a large deathtrap of fire. Most of the passengers were murdered, a total of 36 innocent civilians. Mughrabi and the other attackers died. The attack became known as the Coastal Road Massacre and was the trigger for the Israeli Operation Litani against PLO bases in Lebanon three days later.
The Palestinian Authority named a Hebron girls' school in honor of Mughrabi. Her name has also been given to summer camps and both police and military courses.
The Israeli claim that the bus was full of civilians where the palestinians claim that it was full of military personnel.
