Silas Katompa Mvumpa (born 6 October 1998), formerly known as Silas Wamangituka and now known as Silas, is a Congolese professional footballer who plays as a forward for Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart.

Career

Silas began playing football in Kinshasa, DR Congo with his local club Olympic Matete FC. At the age of 17, his performances earned him a move to Alès in France, and after his debut season moved to Paris FC in the French Ligue 2.[2] Silas made his professional debut for Paris FC in a 2–0 Ligue 2 win over Troyes AC on 31 August 2018.[3] [4]

On 13 August 2019, Silas signed a five-year deal with the German club VfB Stuttgart.[5] He played a big part in Stuttgart's promotion to the Bundesliga. In his first 11 games, he recorded 7 goals and three assists.

Controversy

On 8 June 2021, VfB Stuttgart revealed in a club statement that Silas’ last name was in fact Katompa Mvumpa, not Wamangituka, which was the name he was often referred by. Mvumpa had a tryout with Belgian side Anderlecht in 2017 and he says he was pressured to move to Paris by his former representative. Mvumpa's agent allowed the young player to live with him in Paris and, according to Mvumpa, also changed his name and date of birth. Mvumpa joined Stuttgart in 2019 from French second-division side Paris FC.

Stuttgart believe the agent altered Mvumpa's identity to increase the young player's dependence on the agent. Furthermore, he was 1 year older, with his birth year being 1998, rather than 1999. He stated that his club and his new agent helped him gain confidence to reveal these details, after having them held against him as a threat by his previous agent. VfB Stuttgart do not expect any sanctions against the club and player.[1] In future he wants to be called Silas.[6]
