Microfinance in Tanzania began with NGOs (Non-Government Organizations) and SACCOS (Savings and Loans Cooperatives) in 1995 and has continued to grow with the increased success of microfinance internationally.
In 2001, the National Microfinance Policy was approved and created to encourage the growth of microfinance in Tanzania.
