He was born in Lexington, Kentucky.

He worked to integrate streetcars in St. Louis (horse-drawn at the time) inckuding organizing a boycott after legal injunctions failed to stop discriminatory practices.[2] He established an organization to aid Exodusters.[2] He also helped establish Lincoln University.[3] He led protest of the siting of Sumner High School in a heavily polluted area in close proximity to the train station and an area of brothels.[4]
