Hiiraan Online (HOL) is the oldest news and most popular websites dedicated to news and information about Somalia and the Horn of Africa.[1][2][3] It is published in English and Somali.

History

Hiiraan Online was founded in Ottawa, Canada, on July 1st, 1999[1], making it the first Somali news website. Its founder, Ahmed Gure, a former airline Captain with Somali Airlines[4], started the website after realizing that the internet could deliver fast and reliable news to the growing Somalia diaspora.

Content

The website publishes news articles, opinions, and political commentary[2] and remains one of the most critical[5] and reliable news websites in the Somali media landscape[6][7]. Hiiraan Online is regularly cited frequently in academia[2][8], books[9] and international media.
