Ian Johnstone is a veteran English born, New Zealand broadcaster, presenter and journalist with a career expanding almost 60 years. Johnstone was born in a small English border village, Longtown.[1]He came to New Zealand in 1961 after working in Britain and Zambia.[2][3][4][5][6]

Early career

In Johnstone's early career, he was a teacher at the District High School in Temuka, New Zealand. In Timaru, Johnstone got a part-time job as an announcer at Radio 3XC.[1]

Career

Johnstone’s was a presenter for the 1960’s series of Close Up that was broadcast in New Zealand. [7]He then became a reporter and producer for the New Zealand programme, Compass that aired from 1964 up until 1969.[8] He was also notable for being a presenter for the New Zealand Telethon from 1975 until 1993.[2] Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Johnstone continued to work on various New Zealand produced Television shows as a presenter or narrator. His book Stand and Deliver was published in 1998.[9][10] His most recent work was for the 2019 New Zealand documentary, Hillary: Ocean to Sky as the narrator.[11]
