Comment: Eren is an academic and should be evaluated using WP:SNG, in his case WP:PROF is appropriate. He meets Criteria #1 "The person's research has had a significant impact in their scholarly discipline, broadly construed, as demonstrated by independent reliable sources." Eren's development of oligotyping to sort DNA sequence data and his lead development of the platform anvi'o are both examples of his impact on science. He has 80 publications which, according to Google Scholar in July 2021, have been cited over 6900 times.DaffodilOcean (talk) 08:51, 4 August 2021 (UTC)

A. Murat Eren (Meren) is computer scientist known for his work on microbial ecology and developing novel, open-source, computational tools for analysis of large data sets.

Early life and education

Eren grew up in the Barhal Valley in Turkey and studied cryptography as an undergraduate at Canakkale Onsekiz Mart Universitesi[1] where he earned a B.S. in 2002.[2] He moved to the United States and started his Ph.D. at the University of New Orleans. While working at the Children's Hospital of New Orleans, Eren was introduced to microbiology by Michael Ferris. In 2011 Eren completed his Ph.D. that was titled "Assessing microbial diversity through nucleotide variation".[3]

Career and research

Following his Ph.D., Eren was a postdoctoral scientist at the Marine Biological Laboratory from 2011 until 2015, when he moved to the University of Chicago.[4] His Ph.D. research involved developing a new method to examine diversity of microorganisms within high throughput sequencing datasets. Eren first applied his method of oligotyping[5] to microbes in a human genitourinary tract[6] and then expanded to use oligotyping in the oral microbiome.[7][8] Eren has also examined the the division of microbes found in the human mouth,[9][10] nitrogen-fixing bacteria in the ocean,[11] and bacteria in sewage.[12] Eren is an advocate of open-source software[4] and leads the community development of Anvi'o, a platform to allow analysis and visualization of large datasets.[13][14]
