North Ludlow Axel Beamish (1842-1923), known as North L.A Beamish, was born on 14 June 1842 in Annemount, Glounthaune, Co. Cork, the eldest son of Col. North Ludlow Beamish, FRS and grandson of William Beamish, a Captain of the 5th Dragon Guards[1] and Knight of the Hanoverian Guelphic Order. He was educated at TCD and graduated with a BA. He became a director of Beamish and Crawford Brewery Ltd. A keen cattle breeder and exhibitor, he served as president and treasurer of the Munster Agricultural Society, was a devout supporter of its accompanying Munster Dairy Institute and was credited by the Cork Examiner as a pioneer in the establishment of its Agricultural Showgrounds in Ballintemple. In 1895, he was living at n Ashgrove House, Queenstown, Co. Cork.[2] Beamish bought Ballymacshanroe Castle in the late 19th century.[3] He also served on the committee which organised the Cork International Exhibition of 1902-1903. The Cork Examiner wrote after his death that he was one of the best known prize breeders in Ireland. He also won many prizes in England.[4] He was a member of many philanthropic bodies. An advocate of expanding education, he was involved in the Free Library Movement and served as Chair[5] on the committee of the Carnegie Free Library in Cork and was a contributor to the Cork Historical & Archaeological Society. He died suddenly on 16 May 1923 while staying at the Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin. Beamish was buried in Old Church Cemetery, Cobh.[6][7][8][9][10]

On 16 November 1869, Beamish was married to his cousin Edith Anne, the daughter and co-heiress of the Rev. William Hamilton Thompson, the Rector of Stoke Dry, Co. Rutland, England J.P. by his wife Anne Jane Margaret Beamish the daughter and heiress of William Beamish of Beaumont.[4]

Beamish has appeared in several prominent publications, such as Armorial Families: A Directory of Gentlemen of Coat-armour, Fairbairn's Book of Crests of the Families of Great Britain and Ireland, A Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Landed Gentry of Great Britain and Ireland (Volume 1), British Parliamentary Papers: 1909-1982 (Volume 66) and the Royal Manual of the Titled and Untitled Aristocracy of Great Britain and Ireland.[11][12][13][14][15][16]
