An ethnic Indian was first nominated into the Legislative Council in 1916. In 1929, this was replaced by three elected members. From 1937 to 1963, there were three elected members and two nominated members. From 1963 to 1966, the number of elected Indian representatives was increased to four. From 1966 until the first election after independence, in 1972, there were 12 Indian members, nine elected from communal constituencies and three elected from cross-voting constituencies.
