The Hurtgen forest (or Huertgen Forest--spelled Hurtgen in German)

is located along the border between Belgium and Germany. Scarcely 50 miles in area, the forest lies within a triangle outlined by Aachen, Monschau, and Dueren. The Roer River runs along the eastern edge of the Huertgen, and beyond the Roer is the Rhine River.

The forest was the scene of a bloody, drawn-out battle during World War II, often referred to as the Battle of Huertgen forest (fall 1944 into early 1945).
