Stuart Machin has spent nearly 30 years in the food, fashion and home retail sector holding senior operational and commercial roles in UK retailers Sainsbury’s, Tesco and ASDA and more recently 10 years in Australia working in Wesfarmers as Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Coles and Target. Stuart returned to the UK in 2017 to take the CEO position at Steinhoff UK, before leaving to join M&S Food as Managing Director (MD) in 2018.[1]

After joining M&S in 2018, Stuart Machin launched an ambitious five-year Food transformation plan including a store ‘renewal’ programme, modernisation of end to end supply chain operations and partnerships with Ocado and Costa.[2]

In May 2021, Stuart Machin's remit expanded as he was appointed joint COO taking oversight responsibility for Store and Central Operations, Property, Store Development, Technology, People and the Island of Ireland whilst remaining the Food MD.[3]

In March 2022, it was announced that CEO Steve Rowe would step down after six years in role [4] [5]. Stuart Machin was announced as his successor as CEO, with Katie Bickerstaffe assisting as co-CEO.[6]

Stuart Machin is also a Non-Executive Director for Ocado Retail.[7]
