Kevin Perez (born April 20, 2003), known professionally as Kay Flock, is an American rapper and songwriter. He rose to fame through a variety of singles, most notably "Not in the Mood" by Lil Tjay, which would peak at number 61 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Early life

Kay grew up within the Bronx, which he described as "dangerous". During his teen years, he would listen to Brooklyn drill artists, as well as King Von. During his time at school, he would attempt to play baseball and basketball; however, the sports would "fizzle out after school".[3]

Career

2020–2021: Early career

Following his release from juvenile detention in March 2020, and at the urging of his friend B-Lovee, Kay Flock released his debut single "FTO" in May 2020, which used the beat for 22Gz's "Blixky Gang Freestyle". Upon the song being posted to Triller, Lil Tjay would share it, resulting in Kay gaining followers in New York City. "FTO" was followed by "Opp Spotter", which featured B-Lovee and, as of December 2021, had 3.4 million views on YouTube.[4]

In March 2021, Kay Flock released "Brotherly Love" alongside B-Lovee and Dougie B; the song had 8 million views on YouTube and 3 million streams on Spotify as of December 2021.[4]

2021–present: Capitol Records

In July 2021, Kay Flock was signed to Capitol Records.[4] He would release his debut mixtape, The D.O.A. Tape, on 5 November 2021, which would peak at number one on Heatseekers Albums.

In August, he released "Is Ya Ready"; the song was named within Jon Caramanica's top 28 songs of 2021.[5]

In September, Kay released "Being Honest",[6] which sampled "changes" by XXXTentacion.[7] The song was said to be "reminiscent of G Herbo" and was named within Pitchfork’s top 38 rap songs of 2021 and top 100 songs of 2021.[7][8]

In October, he would be featured on "Not in the Mood" by Lil Tjay, which also featured Fivio Foreign.[9] The song would peak at number 61 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In November, he was named Billboard’s Hip Hop Rookie of the Month.[10] During an interview with XXL, he stated that his style of rapping was compared to King Von and Pop Smoke,[4] with Asian Doll saying that Von would've been a fan of Kay Flock.[11]
